What is a Disconnect Enclosure?

A disconnect enclosure is a specialized housing unit designed to contain electrical disconnect switches. These switches provide a means to isolate electrical circuits and equipment for maintenance, ensuring safety and compliance with industry standards. The enclosure not only protects the disconnect switch from environmental hazards but also safeguards personnel by preventing accidental contact with live electrical components.

Why is a Disconnect Important?

The disconnect switch is a crucial component in electrical systems for several reasons:

  1. Safety: It allows for the safe disconnection of electrical power, enabling maintenance and repairs without the risk of electrical shock.
  2. Compliance: Meeting safety regulations and standards, such as the National Electrical Code (NEC), is essential for operating legally and safely.
  3. Emergency Shutdown: In case of an emergency, a disconnect switch provides a quick and effective way to shut down power, preventing accidents and equipment damage.
  4. Maintenance Efficiency: Facilitates routine maintenance by providing an easy and safe way to isolate electrical circuits.

Locations of disconnects and requirements for proper disconnect spacing are determined by the purchaser. Consult Space Occupied by Disconnect drawing to determine whether or not the disconnect device you are using will fit the enclosure size that you have selected for the application.

Refer to the current National Electrical Code 2008 article 430.10(B) for wiring space required for the size of conductors to be connected to disconnect. Always verify your application to determine if the wiring space is adequate before drawing approvals.

Custom Stainless Enclosures, Inc. is not responsible for verifying flange design, with customer’s disconnect and or enclosure sizes.
